In this project my class produced a live sketch comedy show. We fist learned about improve and practiced with many improve drills and strategies that professionals use. From there we started watch sketch comedy examples that both were entertaining and enlightening because of the message behind each of the sketches. Next we worked on our creative writing skills by writing our own sketches. After that we would do a table read and read our sketch out loud to each other to try and figure out which ones had the most potential . We then perfected our sketches and practiced until we preformed on exhibition.
Our sketch was inspired by commercials on TV that talk about medicine or products that have been proven to cause long term health issues or have led to lawsuits. We used a familiar structure, medical/lawsuit commercials, paired with an unexpected topic, gummy bears, to set the tone allowing the audience laugh at the absurdity of the gummy bears while at the same time making connections to an already existing topic. The premise is that people are part of a public service announcement regarding sugar free gummy bears which don’t come out so well when you ingest them. They play victims which are there to convince people not to eat them. We used the Rule of Three in our sketch, which means you see the joke three times, each time more heightened and comedic than the last. The Rule of Three allows you to end with a hard punch line with the third heighten being the strongest and most absurd. The characters also help with exaggerating the severity of the problems. All three of the victims recount their stories after eating the gummy bears; each story gets progressively more emotional and descriptive to the point that it starts to sound like a tragedy, which ironically becomes comedy for audiences to watch.
