Humans of South Bay
Project Description
The purpose of this project was to get to know people of South Bay. By interviewing people that we know and people that we would like to get to know a little bit more about. Its basically Humans of New York but with a twist.
Pre-Interview
I decided to interview my coach. Coming up with questions was really easy I just asked the simple questions and with every answer there was an awesome story. What was difficult was coming up with questions related with world history because I didn't know much about him so It was hard coming up with a historical event and questions when it might not even relate/concerned him.
Interview
I had done the interview in the gym right after my workout.. I felt like the interview was really natural like a regular conversation. Except I had my phone as a recording device.
Reflection
1. Why did you interview the person you did?
- I Interviewed my coach because I see him every day and I know only so much of him so I thought you know what im going to get to know him better as a person not just my coach.
2. What did you learn about them that you didn't know before?
- He went to the army right after he became a pro boxer.
3. How did they feel about being interviewed?
- He was actually really excited to know that I want to know more about his back story.
4. Who else do you know who you want to devote time to sitting down and talking to like this?
- I also really wanted to interview one of my friends from the gym, his name is Austin.

Meet Coach Vernon
I met Vernon two years ago at the gym. It was my first day of training.
He has been in the sport of boxing for over 30 years. Some of it as a competitor professional and armature then had to retire to become a coach.
I interviewed Vernon at City Boxing in San Diego. On the of October, 2015. We talked for like 20 min- the story below is taken from the transcript of the interview.

The Interview
My dad is a boxing coach.
That right there, my dad was always coming around the block and he would ask me when i'm gonna come to the gym. Then he would give me $5 and i would go run off and play. This was when my momma and him weren't together . This was when I was getting older. I was like 12 13. When I was 14 he come around the block and ask me when I'm gonna come to the gym, what had happen was My best friend gave his brother my boxing magazine and his brother gave the magazine to his friend. His friend was this big 6’2 guy named louie june, what it is, is that magazine has a picture of the champion in the middle of it. And they ripped the page out and put it on the wall, like a poster. He had all of these posters of champions on his wall. And he come down and he had my book in his hand and i was like give me my book, aye man give me my book. Im jumping around trying to get my book remember he's like 6’2 and i was probably only like 5’7 and he was holding my head like a little kid saying aye man get out of here. I was so mad i told him I'm gonna get my dad to kick your ass. and he goes man you dad don't know how to box. That pissed me off so much, just to hear him say that. Next thing you know I was waiting for my dad to come around the block to ask me to got to the gym, me and my friend were waiting on the corner. i ran to the car i said dad i want to box, the window rolled down an I said dad I want to box. He said get in the car, he knew something was up. So i got in the car and he said Vernon I'm not gonna teach you how to box so you can use it on the street, if you wanna box you gotta be champion of the world.and then It got quiet and then he says well you want to be champ of the world or what and i’m like uh yeah. He said meet me on this corner everyday at 5pm, don't let nothing ever get in the way of you meeting me at this corner. I never missed meeting him on that corner for five years.
What I do outside of coaching? Study, what do I study? Other coaches, the style of coaching, the game . You have to be on top of your game. You have to know everything. You have to know the whole business. I make sure I know who's who. I know a lot of people, I’ve been in this business for 35 years.
