Project Description
In this project we created a simulation to represent the struggles of a refugee's journey to a better life and what they might actually go through. We did it to gain sympathy for those who are going through it and to raise awareness. From what I remember at first doing a simulation wasn't one of the options to present during festival. We had the choice of doing a museum exhibit, play and Publications for the International Rescue Committee (IRC)At first the team couldn't decide what we wanted half wanted to do a play and the other half wanted to do an exhibition. Until Dr.p held a lunch meeting for anyone to help come up with ideas for festival and that's where the simulation came along.
The documents above were used as building block for our project. In order to make these documents my partner and I had read an article about Najlaa's journey, based on the information we had we filled out the documents.
Play Test 1
From what I remember this first play test my group had nothing, we didn't know what to say and had no props. So we were just there, improvising. Making up stuff as we go. From there we realized that we needed a script to give us some guide lines.
Play Test 2
Before the play test every group was able to use cardboard to make their props, my group didn't use the cardboard, we again didn't have any props but a tarp for us to sit on. After we decided that we need to start building for our camp.
Play Test 3
At this point we had a general idea for our script and finished what we wanted to build for out tents. But noticed that the tents weren't what we had in mind they were pcb pipes with a small tarp hardly covering anything so we put it on the bottom for us to sit on. We all came to an agreement that we would ask around to see if anyone would let us barrow their camping tents. Having the refugees (8th graders) come through our station was the highlight of my day they were just so silly, there was one little girl in particular she was laughing so at us and she as getting frustrated because she wasn't getting accepted anywhere and she didn't have enough money to be smuggled so she was just stuck.
The Final Play Test
Here is when we had all that we needed, we had a tent and a script. But having our peers come through was tough because they had asked us questions about who our character is in the camp and that had me and my group member work on our script so we would get stuck like that on exhibition.

Simulation
Some memories from the day of the simulation were us hiding brownies in the tent and we would eat them before everyone came through, having one of my group members yelling at a kid to get out of a tent. A piece of advice I would give to teachers who are wanting to do this project is to give the students more time to build for their station. Advice for students is to know your character sheet.
